Why Supplemental Health Insurance is Necessary

If you are one of the millions of Canadians not covered by a group health plan, you are vulnerable to healthcare expenses not covered by your Government Health Insurance Plan.

Government cutbacks in health care funding have left Canadians hesitant about the future of their health care. For example, in 2003 the Ontario government cut back funding in certain home care benefits. This results in shifting more financial responsibility to individuals.

Some residents of Ontario may qualify for the government-sponsored Ontario Drug Benefit (O.D.B.) program. See if you qualify.

However, if you do not have group benefits through your place of employment, and you do not qualify for the Ontario Drug Benefit program, then you can  obtain a quote for a personal benefit plan. (Also visit our Online Quotes Section for more plan options.)

Not sure what exactly OHIP provides for you? Check what OHIP covers.

Perhaps you have recently left valuable group benefits behind, due to a change in your personal circumstances. You may qualify for our group conversion program, which guarantees continued insurance benefits without having to qualify medically for coverage.

Snowbirds and other Travellers

Many Canadians travel to the U.S.A., the Carribean, and Mexico for vacations each year. Yet they do not realize that their OHIP insurance only covers them to the equivalent of Ontario rates. An accident or an illness that occurs while on vacation could cost thousands of dollars and wipe out years of retirement savings.

Furthermore, when you travel to Quebec, you must pay out-of-pocket for doctors expense incurred, and submit your receipts to OHIP for reimbursement.
